Options for Independence
Our residences help individuals achieve the greatest level of independence in their lives. Services include 24-hour supervision and support, assistance with household chores, life skills training, transportation training, appropriate clinical supports, recreational activities, and opportunities for residents to become an integral part of their community. For individuals who are able to achieve greater independence, we offer the opportunity to live independently in the community by ensuring that they have the specific supports they require.
Living More Independently
Even as an 18-year-old, Denise knew it would be a challenge to be more independent and to manage her emotions. With the support of her family, she made the move to the Leake & Watts Glover residence for adults with Intellectual / Developmental Disabilities. Now 22, she has learned skills that help her make decisions for herself. She’s getting on-the-job training in the Pre-Vocational Training program, working in the café, doing maintenance work, and delivering mail to offices. She has improved judgment, is better at dealing with her emotions, and has learned to acknowledge more quickly when she has made a mistake. Living more independently now, Denise is happy with her progress.

I Make Spaghetti With Meatballs
Heriberto and Mark became friends while living together at Leake & Watts’ Popham House, where they learned how to cook and clean alongside other residents with developmental disabilities. But they were both ready and excited for the next step – moving together into a Leake & Watts Supportive Apartment of their own. They continue to receive support from the staff, who take them to the supermarket and help them read the labels so they buy healthy food. They also benefit from financial supervision, teaching them how to manage their money and making sure that their paychecks are deposited correctly into their bank accounts. Both Heriberto and Mark are enjoying the freedom of living on their own.
